Lack of  Sunlight

Whenever you lack the appropriate amount of exposure to the sun, it is likely that you will suffer from a lack of this vitamin. To ensure you avoid this, it is advisable to spend as much time out in the sun as possible. Note that you have to find the appropriate level of exposure since when it is in excess, it can also damage your skin.

You have to use sunscreen, but don’t use too much or else it will impede the absorption of vitamin D through the skin. For those people who live in areas that have cold climates, they are often advised to use other methods to increase their levels of vitamin D such as eating certain types of foods. Additionally, they might be advised to take supplements in order to ensure they don’t suffer from a deficiency.

Diet

Poor diet can also contribute to low vitamin D. This is especially true when it comes to individuals who don’t eat enough vegetables, fruits and foods such as dairy products which are known to contain high amounts of this vitamin. However, there are instances when you might consume more of these foods and still end up with a deficiency. When this occurs, it could be as a result of other factors that affect the rate with which it is absorbed in the body. Some of the diseases that might lead to this include colitis or Crohn’s which damage the digestive tract lining thus impeding the absorption of essential nutrients and vitamins. These diseases are known as the major vitamin D deficiency causes.

Inability Caused by the Body

There are instances when vitamin D deficiency causes are attributed to the inability of your body to properly covert the vitamin into its active form. In this regard, there are some hereditary, kidney and liver diseases which are associated with the condition. There are other instances when medications can also lead to this state. These include medication for ulcers, steroids, drugs used to control blood cholesterol levels and sleeping pills.

Alcohol

This is yet another cause of vitamin D deficiency and this is because it affects the metabolism rate of the vitamin. Alcohol has an adverse effect on humans and as such, it is advisable to use it in limits or not use it at all.  In some instances, lack of this essential vitamin could be a result of the incapacity of the body to process the vitamins. It is by understanding these causes that you can prevent the chances of suffering from the condition.
